The areas of the medieval city are marked by the Kloveniersburgwal and Geldersekade on the Oude Zijde, and on the Nieuwe Zijde by the Singel. During the late 15th-early 16th century, it was city wall with fortified gates at strategic points. Some of those gates can be seen still, though the main parts of walls have been demolished by the city's growth.
