Amsterdam & its brown cafes

Posted 1 year ago by avatar antonio in response to david's question: Is there anyone who can explain to me why Amsterdammers called their brown cafes this way? (give a different answer) .

The name "bruin café" - the English brown café - comes from the interior, stained with smoke from centuries of use - but nowadays they simply put on the brown paint. You may also find sand on the wooden floor or Persian rugs on the tables to soak up spilled beer. Some sell snacks or full meals.
