I had an unforgetable time by renting a paddleboat in Utrecht 2 years ago. It was raining, but I couldn't care less. I took the paddleboat from the municipal library and had a circular route through the old town, feeling the scent of the old churches and gazing at the chic shops along the canal. What makes Utrecht appealing is exacly these canals, built in the 13th century well below the street level. The paddleboat is 6 euros, but for quite the same price you can try a boat trip (if you don't feel like making any effort, and would rather be just a spectator).
